Design Inspiration, Tips & Trends

September 17, 2020

With the exception of home offices, it’s been a difficult year to announce or predict trends. One of the main reasons is the lack of trade shows and exhibitions where new products and ideas flow. As furnishings and interior design tend to follow larger trends in fashion, the industry has been at a disadvantage being unable to attend and present at shows.

It’s been 9 months since the last major furniture show! That’s a lot of time and potential inspiration lost to the pandemic. We’ve been racking our brains and thinking about some trends we feel will be big this season.

Comfort over everything

In times of uncertainty, comfort is king. Chairs like Siegfried Recliner or Cloud Comfort Air Chair maximize comfort—kicking back with a good book or favorite new show is always better when you’re relaxed and supported. The bed is always popular in the fall and winter months, and something like the Harlequin Virtuose Motion Mattress that can turn any bed into an adjustable maximizes your bedrest without changing your whole bedroom.

Beautiful Home Offices

This trend is obvious. We’ve covered it a lot while the Work from Home revolution was getting underway, but there’s one theme about home offices that we feel is most important: flexibility. Having a desk like the BDI Centro Lift, that can easily switch between standing and sitting, is important to keep the body engaged. Flexibility in terms of location is also important, the BDI Bink Mobile Media Table supports working wherever you want.

Living Outdoors

Embracing the outdoors is a natural side effect of staying home more. We’re blessed with an amazing climate year-round, when it’s not too hot, so we can use durable pieces like the Surf Sun Chaise or Moma Bar Table to create places for relaxation and entertainment. With a collection like the Jardin Couture Diva Set, you can set up outdoors with a coffee table, dining table and chairs, and even a daybed for open air napping.

Dining Dichotomy

Trends in dining continue along two lines of thought: formal and casual. Formal dining spaces are best evoked by such pieces as the Planer Table and Belinda Chair, which possess a more traditional look. Casual dining spaces benefit more from rounded designs like the Clessidra Table and Lea Chair to create openness and irregularity.

Neutral Colors

All shades of blue are still predominant—as a major chromatic element in Coastal Contemporary style, this makes sense. For other colors we see a huge variety, but if we had to narrow it down to a trend, we’d say that overall there is a large movement towards neutral and calming tones balanced with the odd pop of bold color.

Phenomenal Fall

In terms of trends, fall seems like it will be pretty relaxed, with a focus on neutral colors, maximizing comfort, and creating highly liveable outdoor spaces at home. While they’re simple, we love these trends, and look forward to seeing how they’ll develop!
