It’s okay to skip the sofa. There is no rule that a living room has to have a sofa. Using 4 chairs with a low table in the center makes for an inviting space to entertain. Use a round or square area rug to tie the grouping together.
When picking colors for the wall, your favorite color with muted hints of gray will balance out the color and take away some of the shock value. Or if you think the color is too dark, have the person mix the color to a 50% tint so you’ll get the desired effect without darkening the room too much. Testing the color beside your furniture at different times of the day will also help you realize what you’re truly getting into. You can bring a piece of fabric from the room, a pillow or a photo to help pick the right match from the start.
