How to Choose Appealing Lighting for Your Bedroom
The right lighting can have a magical effect on your bedroom, creating an atmosphere of greater warmth and intimacy seemingly out of thin air. That’s why your lighting plan deserves the same careful attention as your room plan. To help get you started, we’ve put together a few tips on achieving beautiful bedroom lighting.
Learn your lighting types
There are three types of lighting – ambient, task and accent. Ambient lighting is the uniform light that fills the whole room. Accent lighting highlights specific areas or features. Finally, task lighting is brighter and more focussed than the surrounding lights; a reading light, like the highly flexible Giraffa , is a great example. A good lighting design will combine or ‘layer’ at least two of these lighting types, creating variety and letting you adjust the light level to suit your needs.
Upgrade to dimmer switches
Dimmer switches are practically essential if you’re serious about your light plan; they let you take the room from bright to relaxing in a heartbeat. Lowering the light level has an almost immediate soothing effect, helping you unwind well in advance of bedtime. You’ll also use less electricity, burn through fewer light bulbs, and save on power bills.
Contemporary light fixtures offer a wonderful palette for creativity. The fixtures themselves are sculptural and surprising, and when it comes to placement you have a wealth of options. Punctuate the room with glamorous lamps, like the Alain. Or forfeit the conventional reading lamp altogether and hang a pair of chandeliers directly above y our bedside tables. Use a cluster of small suspension lights for a display that’s even more than the sum of its parts. Ceiling lights let you use the full height of your room, opening up new opportunities for original uses of the space.
Consider light temperature
When shopping for light bulbs, consider the effect of light temperature or light color. Warm light is yellower (think of the effect of candlelight, or firelight), while cool light is pure white. Warm light is the most appealing option for bedroom lighting; it creates an effect that is cozy, intimate and flattering. Replace any existing cool white bulbs in the bedroom for a quick and easy improvement to the ambiance.
