Have You Heard About Operation Christmas Child?
Each year since 1993 Samaritan’s Purse based in the Carolinas has distributed hundreds of thousands of shoeboxes around the holiday season filled with age and gender appropriate gifts. This incredible project has grown exponentially since then so that to date over 113 million—yes million—boxes have been delivered to children and teenagers in over 100 countries. A fun fact on the website is that these boxes are delivered by all of these means —planes, boats, camels, elephants, helicopters, covered wagons, dog sleds and good old feet!
Individuals and groups all over the country fill shoeboxes with as many wonderful items that they can squeeze into the box—yoyos, trucks, dolls, toothbrushes and toothpaste, playing cards, harmonicas, hair ribbons, socks, flashlights (with extra batteries), hard candies, paper, crayons—-you can see how much fun this is!
We have been involved with this project almost since its inception and last year our staff and our local Rotary filled almost 75 boxes—it was so special for all of us that our goal this year is 100 boxes and we are getting there. There are over 4100 distribution stations in the US —during collection week (this year it is November 17th to the 24th) all you have to do is deliver the boxes to the closest one and they will get them to Charlotte where they are all inspected by an army of volunteers and then placed aboard a military jet and delivered just like Santa (minus his reindeers).
If you want to put a smile on your face have a look at their site, or let these adorable kids teach you how to pack a shoebox. If you want to get involved drop into the store and we will be happy to provide you with an Operation Christmas Child box. Happy Holidays indeed!
